Lawrence County Tax Levy Information

The county clerk applies local levy rates to your assessed value to get the total on your bill. Lawrence County has multiple taxing districts including school districts, fire districts, road districts, and the city of Mt. Vernon. Each one sets its own rate annually. Two properties with the same assessed value in different parts of the county can owe different amounts based on which districts they fall in.

The Hancock Amendment in the Missouri Constitution limits how much any taxing entity can collect without voter approval. When values rise during reassessment years, levy rates must roll back to keep total revenue within the allowed limit. This protects Lawrence County taxpayers from sudden jumps in their bills. Real estate gets reassessed every two years in odd-numbered years, and new construction is added annually. The county also handles delinquent tax sales under Chapter 140 of the Missouri Revised Statutes for properties with three or more years of unpaid taxes.
