You can also request a tax waiver (Statement of Non-Assessment) through the Barton County assessor's website. Waivers are available for new state residents, first-time vehicle owners, people who did not own personal property on January 1, military personnel whose home record is not in Missouri, and leased vehicles where the leasing company paid taxes. The assessor's site also has a change of address form for real estate, personal property, and business accounts. If your address is not updated, your bill might not reach you, and that does not relieve your tax obligation.

Barton County Tax Record Search Methods

The Barton County collector's taxpayer portal at bartoncountycollector.org lets you search tax records several different ways. You can look up records by full name, partial name, real estate statement number, personal property statement number, personal property parcel number, or real estate parcel number. Results are limited to the first 100 records, so the more specific your search, the better your results.

The search format matters. Real estate statement numbers start with R followed by the number (like R1912345). Personal property statements start with P. General statement numbers use the S- prefix. Real estate parcels use a long format like 01-1.0-01.0-000.0-000-123.456. For name searches, you can use a partial name if you are not sure of the exact spelling.

Values are set using a standard rate book. If your vehicle series is not specified, the assessor picks the most expensive one. You can find your assessed value in the lower right corner of your tax statement.

Barton County Tax Questions

The Barton County assessor's website has a helpful FAQ section. The most common question is why you got taxed on a vehicle you sold. The answer is simple. Missouri taxes you based on what you owned on January 1 of the tax year. There is no proration for sales or purchases during the year. If you owned it on January 1, you owe the full year. The same rule applies if you move out of state. Your tax obligation was set on January 1, so you still owe even if you no longer live in Missouri.

To avoid late fees, your payment must be postmarked no later than December 31. Payments postmarked after that date get returned and penalties get added. For license plate renewal, you need a paid tax receipt or waiver from the previous year, an inspection slip (unless the car is new), proof of insurance, and your renewal notice if you have one.

If you think your Barton County assessment is too high, appeal to the Board of Equalization through the county clerk before the third Monday in June. Further appeals go to the Missouri State Tax Commission. The Missouri Property Tax Credit is also available for qualifying Barton County residents.

Note: Cash, check, and credit card payments are all accepted at the Barton County Collector's office in Lamar.
